Position of Executive Director

The Texas State Rifle Association (TSRA), the premier firearms and shooting sports organization in Texas, is seeking applications for the position of Executive Director (ED). As the state affiliate to the NRA and with over 30,000 members, TSRA is committed to: 1) Upholding Texans’ rights to keep and bear arms as provided for by the second amendment, 2) Safeguarding Texans’ inalienable rights to protect themselves, their property and their families, and 3) Supporting shooting sports programs including adult and youth competitions, hunter education, and other firearm-related programs, events and activities.

The Executive Director will serve as the public face and primary ambassador of TSRA, championing its mission and advancing the Association’s presence within local communities and across the state. This role is responsible for growing and engaging membership, leading fundraising efforts, and building strong partnerships with members, sponsors, and aligned organizations. The ED should be enthusiastic about shooting sports, resolute about our Second Amendment (2A) rights, and up to date on issues surrounding firearm and 2A legislation, shooting sports, hunting and conservation, and firearm education. The Executive Director reports to the Executive Committee, through the President of TSRA.

Specific duties and responsibilities of the Executive Director include:

Leadership

  • Implement the mission, objectives and policies of TSRA. The ED does not set policy; policy is established by the Executive Committee and Board of Directors.
  • Support the various aspects of the business of the association such as membership recruitment and services, fundraising, contributions and donations, and grants.
  • Develop and implement a short (one-year) and long-term (5-year) strategic plan that highlights and prioritizes revenue, membership, marketing and media relations among other objectives.
  • Maintain communication with the TSRA Office Manager to support coordination of organizational activities.
  • Develop strategic partnerships with shooting clubs and ranges, industry leaders including firearms manufacturers, major retailers, and corporate supporters, and conservation and like-minded organizations.

Membership and Recruiting

  • Serve as the liaison for the TSRA Local Chapter Program, assisting new chapters getting started, overseeing established chapters, and attending local chapter programs and events.
  • Oversee the TSRA Recruiter Program.
  • Collaborate with the TSRA Membership Committee to create and implement new membership drives.

Fundraising

  • Work with the TSRA Office Manager to ensure the ED’s activities and expenses stay within budget.
  • Create and implement new fundraising initiatives to help further and support the Association’s mission.
  • Seek donations for giveaways, raffles, and sweepstakes.
  • Work with the Office Manager and Staff to ensure appropriate deadlines are met for fundraising advertising.
  • Oversee and promote contribution programs, such as the Legacy Defenders.

External Relations, Publications and Outreach

  • Plan, organize and coordinate the TSRA Annual Meeting and other related TSRA functions and events.
  • Act as a liaison between TSRA and TSRA Heritage 1919, our 501(c)3 non-profit and provide administrative support for its programs and activities.
  • Act as a liaison and state affiliate between TSRA and NRA, CMP (Civilian Marksmanship Program), Student Air Rifle (SAR) Program, and USA Shooting.
  • Maintain, enhance, and/or seek strategic partnerships with TPWD (Texas Parks and Wildlife Department), Texas AgriLife Extension 4-H Shooting Sports Program, Friends of NRA, Texas Outdoor Partners, conservation organizations, clubs and ranges and others interested in partnering with TSRA on various programs and strategies.
  • Represent the Association at various community and state-wide conservation, political or civic functions, youth and family shooting events, and hunting and fishing shows throughout the year, as supported by the Budget.
  • Represent the Association during the monthly virtual NRA State Associations meetings and attend the NRA Annual Meeting Clubs and Associations Meeting.
  • Communicate the Association’s position on legislation, news, events and programs in media interviews, podcasts, panels, and news briefs/press releases.
  • Provide support, advocacy, and visibility to the Association’s Non-shooting programs.

Legislative Advocacy

  • Serve as a liaison between TSRA, TSRA lobbyist, and TSRA PAC (Political Action Committee).
  • Represent gun issues on behalf of TSRA with TSRA Legislative Coordinator/Lobbyist
  • Provide administrative support to the Legislative Coordinator and PAC.
  • Coordinate legislative strategies with the Legislative Coordinator, adopted by the Executive Committee in support of TSRA goals
  • Track state and federal legislative activity relevant to firearm rights and shooting sports

Qualified Applicant Must be Able to:

  • Represent the Association professional in alignment with its mission, policies, and advocacy objectives.
  • Research, write, edit and proofread articles and take quality photos,
  • Speak to reporters and groups and present with professionalism on behalf of TSRA in interviews with the media (e.g. news, television, radio, Internet),
  • Successfully complete required background check and bonding requirements.
  • The Executive Director must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to travel as required; travel on behalf of the Association is expected.
  • The Executive Director must be, or become, a TSRA member within 30 days of hire and maintain membership in good standing throughout employment.

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • Experience in fundraising and donor development.
  • Experience in establishing and maintaining partnerships with organizations, sponsors, and community leaders.
  • Strong public speaking and presentation skills; comfortable serving as the “Face” of the Association.
  • Strong written, verbal, and digital communication skills.
  • Must possess strong working knowledge of modern office technology and digital communication tools.
  • Ability to manage organization platforms, including membership databases.
  • Ability to review, interpret, and manage electronic records, contracts, and reports.
  • Experience representing an organization in public, media, or advocacy settings.
  • Ability to think strategically about growth, visibility, and long-term relationship development.
  • Self-starter with a high level of initiative and ability to work independently.
  • Relevant management and/or non-profit experience is preferred; Equivalent experience may be considered in place of formal education.

This position may be remote with expected routine visits to the TSRA Headquarters in Bastrop, Texas monthly. Regular travel on behalf of the Association is expected. Salary is commensurate with experience, and mileage reimbursement for approved travel will be provided at standard rates.
